Are expired IDs allowed?
❌ No. Texas law requires that your ID be current and valid.
If you are unable to provide an acceptable form(s) of identification, another way to prove your identity is to provide a witness that is willing to vouch for your identity.
Your witness MUST be able to provide one or more forms of valid identification to prove their identity and must vouch for your identity under Oath.
Texas Requirements For A Credible Witness In Texas, a credible witness must either personally know the Notary or must present to the Notary a valid, unexpired ID issued by the federal or a state government that contains the photo and signature of the witness (1 TAC 87.40[2] and 87.1[1]).
A credible witness must know the signer well enough to be able to swear or affirm the signer’s identity before the notary.

✔Do I need to sign the document before meeting with the notary?
No. For most notarizations, you must sign the document in front of the notary. However, if you need an acknowledgment, you can sign beforehand but must confirm that it is your signature.
✔How do you verify my identity?
We verify your identity using a valid, government-issued photo ID. For Remote Online Notarization (RON), we also use identity-proofing technology and knowledge-based authentication (KBA) questions.
What is the difference between an acknowledgment and a jurat?
✔ Acknowledgment – Confirms that you signed the document voluntarily. You don’t need to sign in front of the notary but must personally appear to confirm it’s your signature.
✔ Jurat – Requires you to sign in front of the notary and take an oath that the contents of the document are true.
